my tank should be almost done, the fabricator said he hopes to finish it by the 11th (today). it is a 12" cube that will be mounted in the front driver's side corner of the bed. approximately 7 gallon capacity. it will have 1" npt bungs so i can run some big 1" lines, once i get a new intercooler core.

also, i just got an email that my new i/c pump shipped, and i should have it on monday. WOOT!

this is the pump i ordered:
jabsco model 50840-0012

I would worry that at that flow rate the water won't stay in the intercooler long enough to absorb the heat or in the heat exchanger long enough to get rid of the heat that is absorbed.

Just like running the motor without a thermostat.

curtis, i appreciate your input, but i think that line of thinking is a bit flawed.

a thermostat is in the cooling system to get the motor up to operating temp and stay there. we want our charge temps as cool as possible.

it has already been proven that larger lines and a higher flowing pump will actually drop temps more. look at sinister's truck, he uses a 55 gpm pump with 1" lines and had iat2 temps below 60 degrees with iat1s at 100 degrees running 23 psi of boost. look at the outlaw 10.5 turboed cars. they run huge lines, like 1.5" and 100+ gpm pumps.

the goal is to cool the charge as much as possible, not to remove the maximum amount of heat per volume of water. the charge is cooled by the fluid running through it. the more cool fluid you can flow through, the better it will work in cooling the hot air charge coming across it.

flow is king in this application. especially when you're running ice water at the track. the more cold water you flow through the intercooler core, the cooler you will be able to keep it, and the cooler the air charge will be.

with a stock setup, the fluid only cycles through once in a 1/4 mile run. that's not near enough. there will be a point of diminishing returns with additional flow, eventually. it seems like once your iat2s and i/c fluid temps going into the core match, then you have maximized the efficiency of the intercooler.

here is some more reading for you on the thermodynamics involved:

you are correct about the fluid going through the heat exchanger too fast to cool back off, but i have a plan to solve that problem too.

at the track running ice water, it is a moot point, as i will be installing a valve to bypass the heat exchanger.

Okay, what intercooler are you running, the stock one or an aftermarket external?

If you are using the stock one, what good are 1" lines if the outlets in the core are smaller?

Stock for now, going to use 5/8" hose. Then I will likely be going to an external unit. I was looking at one that is rated for 2000 hp and has 1" connections, single pass. I am doing the upgrade in stages, because I cant afford all the parts at once.
